February 2, 2001: Published “Racial Discrimination and Violence against Roma in Europe”, a statement submitted by the ERRC for consideration by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, on the occasion of its thematic discussion on Roma, August 15-16, 2000.
March 7, 2001: Published a compilation of articles and information on Roma rights in Greece, timed for submission to the UN Committee against Racial Discrimination on the occasion of that body’s review of Greece’s compliance with the Convention.
CAMPIGNING, CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS
December 1-3, 2000: Held a legal workshop “Civil Rights, Legal Culture and the Roma”, Florence, Italy.
December 6, 2000: Filed an application at the European Court of Human Rights concerning the 1993 mob-violence assault on Roma in Hădăreni, Romania.
December 13, 2000: Testified before the Council of Europe Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities on the status of Roma in Italy.
December 18-19, 2000: Participated in an informal consultation meeting convened by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Paris, France.
January 15-16, 2001: Addressed an International Helsinki Federation conference on Tolerance, Bucharest, Romania.
January 15-17, 2001: Participated in the Informal Consultation of the PrepCom of the World Conference Against Racism, Geneva, Switzerland, as member of the NGO International Steering Committee for the World Conference Against Racism.
January 19-20, 2001: Held first meeting of the Steering Committee for the joint three-year project “Implementing European Anti-Discrimination Law”, undertaken together with Interights and Migration Policy Group and supported by the Open Society Institute, London, U.K.
January 21-22, 2001: Held a training workshop for the staff of the Save the Children Bosnia and Herzegovina office and their partner organisations, Makarska, Croatia.
January 28-30, 2001: Addressed the Stockholm International Forum Against Intolerance, Stockholm, Sweden.
February 1, 2001: Filed an application at the European Court of Human Rights in the Matter of Perušan Jašar v. Macedonia, a case of unremedied police brutality.
February 8-9, 2001: Attended a UNICEF conference on children’s rights and contributed to the Roma-related section, Geneva, Switzerland.
February 14, 2001: Held a lecture on the topic “A Nation Without a State: the Roma” for the students of the Nationalism Studies course at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary.
February 15-16, 2001: Attended Anna Frank Foundation workshop on Holocaust Education in Central and Eastern Europe, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
February 16-17, 2001: Held a legal workshop concerning human rights litigation and law and practice in international and domestic courts, Opatija, Croatia.
February 21-23, 2001: Participated in a legal workshop organised by the Sofia-based Human Rights Project concerning anti-discrimination legislation, Sofia, Bulgaria.
February 22, 2001: Spoke on ERRC field research methods at the European Union Accession Project Monitoring Programme of the Open Society Institute, Budapest, Hungary.
February 22-23, 2001: Addressed the seminar “Recent Mechanisms and Principles for Protection against Discrimination on an Ethnic Basis and Bulgarian Legislation”, co-organised by the Council of Europe, Human Rights Project and the Bulgarian Government, Sofia, Bulgaria.
February 26, 2001: Gave a lecture on discrimination and Roma at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary.
March 9, 2001: Attended a roundtable discussion of government and NGO officials to discuss proposed changes to the Macedonian law on citizenship, Skopje, Macedonia.
March 12-14, 2001: Addressed various audiences on the occasion of receiving the Geuzen Medal of Honour, Netherlands.
March 26, 2001: Attended a roundtable discussion of governments, NGOs and inter-governmental organisations, held in the framework of the Stability Pact, to discuss Roma in the developing crisis in Macedonia, Skopje, Macedonia.
March 30-April 1, 2001: Participated in a meeting organised by the International Council on Human Rights Policy on military intervention, highlighting effect of the NATO intervention on the Roma of Kosovo, Geneva.
April 4-8, 2001: Attended a workshop convened by the Danish Helsinki Committee to train the legal profession in anti-discrimination legislation, Zagreb, Croatia.
April 5, 2001: Participated in a symposium on Roma organised by the Bruno Kreisky Forum, Vienna, Austria.
April 6, 2001: In co-operation with the Budapest-based Human Rights Students Initiative of the Central European University, organised a lecture, film and discussion on a schooling desegregation project in Vidin, Bulgaria, on the occasion of International Roma Day.
April 6, 2001: Participated in a panel discussion on ethnic distance, organised by the Union of Roma Students Novi Sad in the framework of their Kalo Parno Them programme celebrating the International Roma Day, Novi Sad, Yugoslavia.
