Reflections on the 2024 Roma Rights Summer School: Empowering Through Vulnerability and Connection

In a conference room in Athens, Greece, 19 young Romani activists sat in a Socratic circle, engaging in a powerful dialogue about their experiences confronting intersectionality, discrimination, and marginalization. The atmosphere was charged with remarkable vulnerability and strength, as each participant shared their unique story. This gathering was part of one of the flagship activities of the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC): the annual Roma Rights Summer School—a 10-day intensive course that delves deeply into both the theoretical and practical aspects of human rights work. 

I was fortunate enough to join this circle for three days, participating in workshops focused on strategic litigation, intersectionality, and hate crimes. These sessions were eye opening, bridging crucial knowledge gaps and instilling confidence in these young activists. But beyond the information and skills gained, the most invaluable part of the summer school was the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and engage in candid conversations about the collective fight against systemic discrimination. 

Human rights work can be incredibly taxing, both mentally and physically. Many of us have become somewhat desensitized to the harsh realities we deal with daily. What struck me most about this summer school was how it encouraged us to break down the emotional walls we’ve built to cope with this challenging work. It was a chance to reconnect with the individuals whose rights we strive to uphold, allowing us to confront the stark reality of human rights violations with renewed sensitivity and strength. 

This journey of vulnerability allowed us to pivot towards practical learning—understanding potential mechanisms to address these violations became more meaningful. By reconnecting with our “why,” we could more effectively pursue the “how.” This approach ensures that our work remains grounded in the lived experiences of those we serve, making our efforts more impactful.

The Roma Rights Summer School exemplifies the ERRC’s commitment to empowering Roma activists through education and connection. Through these gatherings, a new generation of activists is being equipped with the knowledge, skills, and emotional resilience necessary to challenge discrimination and advocate for human rights. As these young leaders return to their communities, they bring with them not only the tools to effect change but also a strengthened network of support and solidarity. The connections forged and the lessons learned at the Roma Rights Summer School will continue to resonate for those involved, driving forward the mission of the ERRC and the broader movement for Roma rights.
