Call for Experts in the inclusion of Roma, Sinti and Traveller communities through sport as part of the ‘Moving On’ project

About Moving On

The pivotal role of sport in social inclusion and integration of minorities and socially disadvantaged communities has been recognised time and again, yet in many places access to sports for Roma, Sinti, and Travellers remains limited. The EU funded ‘Moving On’ project seeks to promote the inclusion of Roma, Sinti and Traveller communities in Europe through its partners’ initiatives that endeavour to elevate strategies of inclusion at local, national, and European levels with a specific focus on young girls and women that suffer from multiple forms of intersecting discrimination.

About the Advocacy Group:

We are seeking to establish a national Advocacy Group to work with the project partners in each of the partner countries, Belgium (Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Spain) composed of two experts who are engaged in sport, such as educators, practitioners, and athletes from diverse backgrounds—not limited to, but including Roma, Sinti, and Travellers. 

This group will be dedicated to representing and promoting sport, not only as a tool for inclusion and social cohesion, but as a tool of anti-discrimination for Roma, Sinti, and Traveller communities throughout the project and beyond. In exchange, we offer you a change making experience and an allowance of 500€. One of these experts will represent their respective country at the European level, via the European Advocacy Group.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for two experts per country who: 

• Are actively engaged in sports as practitioners, athletes, or educators.
• Possess the expertise necessary to promote anti-discrimination and inclusion within Roma, Sinti, and Traveller communities through sports. 
• Can offer flexible availability to commit 7 working days over 5 months.

Role Description 

• To consider Roma, Sinti, and Traveller voices and realities from differing communities.
• To review policy papers; at least 2 strategic national or EU relevant policy documents including sport as tool for in tackling discrimination and promoting inclusion for Roma, Sinti, and Traveller communities.
• Assess reports from Roundtables led by partners and advocacy groups at regional/national level.
• Collaborate on project activities and outputs, including a proposed pledge on the ‘Healthy Lifestyle 4 All’ initiative to focus on increasing Roma, Sinti, and Traveller wellbeing through sport.
• Create a Code of Conduct promoting fair play, values, rules for inclusion of Roma, Sinti, and Travellers in sport for EU Sport organisations and local authorities
• Endeavor to ensure that Roma, Sinti, and Traveller needs and proposals are reflected in sports policies during and after the project.
• Identify and engage with key stakeholders developing inclusive sports initiatives for Roma, Sinti, and Traveller communities.
• Provide guidance on tailoring project outputs for practical implementation.

How is the work within this position organised?

Experts may be based anywhere in the world and must have knowledge of Roma issues and as well as have a good understanding of English. 

You will be expected to attend a European Roundtable in the Rotterdam, Netherlands and Final Project conference in Brussels, Belgium, in November 2024. Your travel, accommodation and subsistence costs will be covered by the respective lead partner organisations.
