Advancing Roma Rights in Europe
05 October 2020
The project, implemented by the ERRC in partnership with the Rosa Parks Foundation, aims to increase Romani people’s access to justice and empower Romani communities to challenge the inequality and discrimination they face. This will be achieved by Romani victims of discrimination, with the support of NGOs and legal professionals, submitting formal complaints to bodies, including courts, equality bodies, and ombudsperson’s offices. By identifying specific issues, gathering evidence, building cases, and taking them to court the project aims to ensure that judgments translate into justice, to see rights bearers become empowered, and to see duty bearers change their behaviour. While the project will bring complaints on behalf of around 80 individuals in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Italy, Romania, and Hungary, the wider impact will be to ensure that all Roma know their rights and feel confident to exercise them.
The project is funded by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020) and began in October 2019.
